I recently found that having worked out how to place a cateogry of products on the homepage of my Magento site I wanted to specify the order that those products were listed in. Mainly this was because I was hiding the standard Magento toolbars, so the customer could not do this themselves. The first place I started looking was the system configuration menu, see below. This seemed like a promising place to start with the dropdown for “Product Listing Sort by”.

I have been thinking about this for a while and I am just not sure what the best option is. Not to mention what the user expects or how twitter originally planned it. Twitter themselves provide a way of creating a “Tweet” button, that also keeps track of how many tweets you have had – you can take a look at it here: [Tweet button][1]. I think the original intention was to allow people to quickly tweet about the page they are reading, which is great for them and hopefully their followers.

This was a simple site based on a HTML home page, with a javascript calculator and a wordpress blog simply attached with the same design. The application form is a third-party component and so I simply built the design in HTML, CSS and Javascript and implemented in WordPress.

The Barras Car Centre website required that they could upload details of new and used cars and display them, as well as provide a feed of the information for other third party sites. It seemed a good candidate for a simple Ruby on Rails website, which was up and running really quickly and to everyone’s satisfaction. For this website the real key was enabling customers to engage via social media and to create a place where pipe smokers could discuss their hobby. Due in part to the way in which smoking in public is becoming less tolerated but also due to the banning of advertising through so many traditional channels the internet and especially social media was an avenue our clients were very keen to utilise. While they had run a success e-commerce website for a number of years they were not happy with their current site, or the technology it was built with and we were able to suggest Magento as a cutting-edge alternative.

Building Martel Maides a new website was a fairly large undertaking and involved a website build, plenty of custom functionality as well as a complex integration project with their existing back-end system. The website look and feel was provided by a third-party designer and my task was to build the entire site from the ground up including some elements of design, but mostly a large amount of HTML and back-end code which in this case was Ruby.

For this job I inherited some branding and an initial homepage design but once I started talking with the client it became clear that the design was somewhat lacking for his needs. I opted for a set of tabs at the top to enter the main areas of the site, including the blog and a secondary navigation menu on the right column of the page. The secondary navigation provided access to the services the company offer.

Fairmoves was a website for a startup estate agent in Guernsey, the project gave me the chance to write a Ruby on Rails application and involved a really slick integrated design. The design used a simple informational front page with a scriptaculous slider control that allowed users to select a price range to view on the property listing page. The listing for each property was put together from highly structured database fields that allowed for some slick graphics indicating the number of bedrooms, bathrooms etc.

This website build was a WordPress site built to a design put together by our in-house designer and included JavaScript fading images and pop-up windows for video, for which we used flowplayer. The site design had a few complicated elements, mainly the JavaScript fading images that needed to fade in-sync with each other (the ship masts overlap on some images etc.). We achieved a really professional looking site and everyone involved was pleased with the results.
